The result is a powerful 1,150 -inch-lbs. of turning force. Other features include: frameless motor with replaceable brushes; compact size for use in tight spaces; textured, anti-slip grip; durable magnesium gear case and all-metal transmission; and a unique impact mechanism that reduces kickback and directs all that torque to the fastener. It’s backed by DEWALT’s three-year limited warranty, 90-day money-back guarantee, one-year free service contract, and two-year free service contract on the batteries.

My first cordless drill that I ever purchased was a 12V DeWalt back in the late 90s (which still works perfectly by the way) and so when it came time to purchase an impact driver I wanted to stay with the same 12V platform in order to share batteries.I did debate between the 12V and 18V models because obviously the 18V is much more powerful, but for my usage (basic homeowner and DIYer - not a full time contractor) I assumed the 12V would work fine... and it has.I now have found myself using this impact driver for all of my screwing needs including the installation of lag screws and bolts. I have also used it with a socket adapter to assemble several items at a speed much faster than any ratchet could ever do.At this point the only thing my drills are used for is... drilling. Yes you could in theory use an impact driver for that, but they aren't designed for it and the slower rotational speeds make it less efficient. Also, this will not replace a good hammer drill because an impact driver applies the impact action in a rotational direction rather than down towards the fastener. If I had any complaints at all it would be that it is often hard to find screwdriver tips that can withstand the impact action without failing. I have snapped off quite a few phillips bits on various projects and have had much better luck with square drive and torx bits, so I have learned from experience when it comes time to buy a box of screws at the home center I shy away from phillips. If I did not already have a collection of 12V tools and batteries, I will admit I would probably opt for the DEWALT DCF815S2 12-Volt Max 1/4-Inch Impact Driver, but that didn't exist when I purchased this particular tool, and as I said I already have other 12V tools that use these same batteries. My major complaint is not directed at the tool itself, but rather at DeWalt. They could have easily developed a 12V lithium ion battery to work with the existing 12V NiCad tools instead of developing an entirely new battery platform. At the very least they could have developed an adapter to convert the new batteries to the old tools... but instead they essentially create obsolete tools each and every time they develop a new line of batteries.Aside from that I have no issues with the tool. It does what I need it to do, it has plenty of power, the quick release chuck holts the bits firm, and it makes driving long screws much, much easier than a drill ever did. Once you switch from a drill to an impact driver... it is fairly obvious you will never go back.See all 1 customer reviews...
